The states of California, Montana, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Iowa require a licensed mental health professional to establish a therapeutic relationship of at least 30 days before issuing an Emotional Support Animal (ESA) letter. This requires two clinical consultations with your independent licensed healthcare provider, scheduled at least 30 days apart.
Due to these state-specific requirements, an additional $65 fee applies to ESA evaluations in these states. Expedited Service is not available for ESA letters where a minimum therapeutic relationship period is required.
These requirements do not apply to Psychiatric Service Dogs. However, the $65 fee still applies to ensure your evaluation is conducted by a provider who meets your state’s specific requirements.
