Understanding ESAs
and PSDs

An Emotional Support Animal (ESA) provides comfort that may help alleviate symptoms of an emotional or mental health condition. ESAs do not require specialized training. An ESA letter must be issued by a licensed healthcare provider and is commonly used to support housing accommodation requests under the Fair Housing Act (FHA).

A Psychiatric Service Dog (PSD) is a type of service animal trained to perform specific tasks that mitigate symptoms of a mental health disability. PSDs can help individuals manage daily activities and reduce the impact of symptoms through task-based support.

Important to Note

Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) and Psychiatric Service Dogs (PSDs) both support individuals with emotional or mental health needs, but their roles are different. ESAs provide comfort that may help reduce symptoms, while PSDs are trained to perform specific tasks that assist with a person’s mental health disability.

According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), individuals have the right to train their own psychiatric service dog and are not required to use a professional training program. Training may be completed professionally or by the owner, as long as the dog reliably performs the necessary tasks.

Who Qualifies?

Individuals who experience emotional or mental health symptoms that substantially impact daily functioning may qualify for an ESA or PSD following an evaluation by a Licensed Healthcare Provider.

Examples of conditions that may be considered include anxiety, depression, PTSD, panic attacks, social anxiety, OCD, stress-related disorders, ADHD, bipolar disorder, autism spectrum disorders, personality disorders, eating disorders, and other emotional or psychological conditions.
